Lighthearted Philosophy Cafe. Friendly discussion groups in Suffolk.
These gatherings are not typical intellectual debates or discussions. In Lighthearted Philosophy Cafes we meet together in a relaxed, welcoming setting such as a local library, where meaningful conversations have the chance to flow naturally.
Together we explore life’s big questions in a way that connects head (intellect) and heart, (inner wisdom/compassion) encouraging deeper insight, compassion and openness.
You have noticed how tech platforms “feed” us topics based on our personal interests?
While this can be useful, it can also deepen a feeling of division between people. You are probably well aware that algorithms on social media platforms create echo chambers that reinforce shared beliefs? Instead of encouraging open-minded dialogue and genuine understanding between people, algorithms re-inforce separation rather than unity.
As a result, it’s hardly surprising there is so much conflict online when firm opinions and personal beliefs are fired at strangers at the tap of keypad!
A different kind of Conversation
This is where Lighthearted Philosophy Café comes in. I wanted to create a positive remedy for the hostile online environment and a welcoming space for in-person conversations.
Who are Lighthearted Philosophy Cafes For?
If you are tired of scrolling online?
Weary of not feeling heard or understood by others.
Longing for thoughtful conversation and new friendly connections?
We warmly invite you to come along, inquire, talk, share, and ponder over a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits in an open, (sometimes cake!) friendly setting.
Before each session, participants can submit ideas for a theme if they wish. We add these suggestions to the “Guinea Pig Money Pot,” and on the day, we pull one out of the hat for the group to explore together.
We also place a few salt-and-pepper guinea pigs on the table to serve as our “talking sticks.” When you feel ready to speak, simply pick up a piggy while the others listen with focus and attention.
Active Listening
We found the “talking stick piggies” method helps support both speaking and active listening and prevents potential eager voices interrupting the conversation if it’s a subject with strong opinions!
One aim of the cafe is to notice when we are speaking from our habitual thinking, picked up from conditioning and news articles rather than a deeper awareness or lived experience.
To encourage active listening we are invited to gently pause for a moment and turn our attention inward before speaking.
During the coffee time the “piggy pot” rules do not apply and we have free flowing conversation as it naturally arises!
